In the early 1990s, a tattoo trend surfaced on beaches and in nightclubs all over the world. This controversial tattoo trend, as it later would come to be known… the “Tramp Stamp.”

Tramp Stamp is a demeaning term that came about refers a woman’s lower back tattoo. It seems this tattoo area is especially popular among women born in the late 70’s, 80‘s, and even early 90’s.

The lower back area of a woman’s body is regarded as highly attractive, making this area of the body particularly popular for tattoos among women. Tattoos themselves have long been stereotyped as being trashy looking, yet hands down the tramp stamp takes the prize for reputation.

In the early 90s, there was a great deal of negative attitude towards women with lower back tattoos suggesting these tattoos were deliberate displays of sexual innuendo, hence the name “tramp stamp” was born.

The reputation and nick name lower back tattoos have taken on has stirred so much criticism and disapproval that many women already having a tattoo on their lower backs are so ashamed of the insulting stigma and stereotype has become a top reason.

Fair or unfair, the connotation of sexual promiscuity associated with female lower back tattoos has become a common tattoo removal reason for women getting tattoo removal.

There are so many women getting tattoo removal for lower back tattoos, that the joke is all women branded with a “tramp stamp” who do not get tattoo removal by 2050 will be known as having a “Gramp Stamp” instead of a tramp stamp. I think everyone would agree that a gramp stamp is in and of itself reason for tattoo removal.
